So… complete drug-cheat San Francisco’s Barry Bonds now holds the MLB Home Run record.

May I remind you Barry, you don’t have the pro-baseball record just yet tho’. You still have 112 to go.

756*

I made my opinion on this in “Hello Mr. Bonds, allow me to introduce myself. You may call me Oh.”

I encourage you to continue fooling yourself, but you probably should get your facts a little less crooked.

Tsk tsk Adam… linking to your own blog? Shouldn’t you just leave your name to do that? But still, glad I could motivate you to (figuratively) get off your ass & write an article. ;)

And crooked facts? How so - you’re downplaying the career of Sadaharu Oh because of (and wait for it… I loved this) Tuffy Rhodes? You’re using that as measuring stick? Wouldn’t it be more accurate to utilize say… some kind of competition - perhaps like the World Inaugural Baseball Classic?

Now I’m not going to be an idiot & state that the NPB is better than the MLB, but it is a damn good league… and Barry Bonds is the title holder for MLB, just not pro-baseball.
I’ll still hold to 868 - but thanks for the offer of something different!

What is it you don’t like about the guy?
Apart from the drug thing or is that it?

Aaah… that’s a question for pretty much anyone who follows baseball (or has played with him)… as he’s a pretty disliked character.
Pure ‘n’ simple, guy’s a prick. Everything is an ‘entitlement’. He seems to think that he is bigger than the game.

Sorry, I am not up on the whole blog ettiquette thing, . But don’t be so happy, I’m also inspired by Lucky Charms, Saved by the Bell and discount tires.

But since it’s all a semantical argument over what is a record, and who’s dubbed with what imaginary fiefdom of the homerun… since league isn’t a consideration, why stop there?

I mean, if the question is who hit the most homeruns, don’t you count Barry’s years at ASU? If it’s just pro-baseball, Playoff homers? Hank’s time with the Clowns?

Do you not count Roger Clemen’s records because his K/9 was higher in his 35+ seasons than 20-29?

It seems that your case is “I say it’s Oh, so it is so.”

Also, I can make my case on So Taguchi if you prefer? Tom Sellick in Mr. Baseball.

And are you to tell me that the Nippon was of higher caliber than the PCL?

What’s the longest hitting streak you recognize? Joe Dimaggio’s 56? his 61? Joe Wilhoit back in 1919?

10 08 2007
withmalice (07:07:21) :

Yawn.

Semantics? No, you’re just indulging in the good ol’ pass-time of *being-an-ass*. And if you do want to bask in semantics, what about Barry’s 3 in-the-park HRs versus Hank’s 1?

I have no problem at all with Barry Bonds holding the ‘Major League HR Record’, well… ‘leasing’ it until A-Rod takes it. But a few things:
1. Let’s get the terminology right: calling him the ‘Pro-baseball HR King’ is incorrect, and frankly just smacks of arrogance.
2. Speaking of arrogance, why do you feel your opinion is so much more important than anyone else’s? (note: rhetorical question, we all know it’s not -and on my blog, guess what: I’m allowed to state my opinion)
3. You raise etiquette, and your lack of understanding of it. I think that’s something you could perhaps explore.

Ahh I see…all round good guy he is..lol
I decided to read up a bit about him.
Mind you, I noticed this is a divided issue, he does have some support. It seems like another u.s race issue to me.

10 08 2007
withmalice (09:17:43) :

I disagree mandate.
A guy many folks are wishing did not have so many injuries is Ken Griffey Jr. If he didn’t, then he’d be right up there with Bonds on this HR total. And he, shares the same racial heritage as Barry Bonds.
Nothing to do with race, has everything to do with being an asshole & a drug cheat.

Sure BB has the *record* but i have to agree with Don… home run derbys have featured him over the last 10yrs or so but he only managed to pull the syringe… whoops i mean cat out of the bag once and that was in `96…

But in all seriousness hes a part time holder and will never be held in any great esteem other than in the eyes of Giants fans… cause the rest of the sport and their fans have dismissed him as a drug cheat..

A sports broadcaster here in Canada sent out a reporter for 2 weeks to cover his date with destiny and he was a right prick, he would only talk with the media when he scored a run…

mandate (19:44:09) :

Fair enough, I don’t know enough about him to argue(I only did about half an hour reading on him, and that was mainly fan comments on espn and they are rather passionate).
Is there a big difference in his averages from ‘before and after’ the doping scandal?

10 08 2007
withmalice (19:51:36) :

Yes.
But the main thing is, at an age where most players start to see a decline in performance (late 30s), Barry saw a massive INCREASE. Add to that, rumored changes in hat/shoe sizes… a massive increase in bulk (which he attributed to ’starting gym workouts a few months earlier this year’).
Additionally: there is no question as to whether Barry used steroids. That he used the ‘cream’ & the ‘clear’ is not under question. But Barry states that he thought it was ‘flaxseed oil’, or some other equally fallacious line of bullshit.

10 08 2007
mandate (21:53:44) :

Flaxseed oil-ha -thats funny .As good as warnies ‘my mum gave me diet pills’.

So where are they at at the moment? Are they not allowed to drug test him etc..?

Mark Ecko, the designer has won the auction to own the ball that Bonds hit for HR no 756. He is running an online auction to decide its fate:
1. Give it to the Hall of Fame
2. Mark it with a giant asterisk
3. Fire it off into space
