Every now 'n' then, someone offers me something that's well worth putting up - despite the team it's for. Someone who's often contributed to some of the stuff I put up here is a Magic fan (and runs by the pseudonym '46')... given how desperate I am to put up something today - I have reluctantly allowed him to write on Orlando, and their outlook for this year.
I kid... kinda. He writes well, and is passionate about his team.
Without further ado...
So your team won the East and had a ok showing in the Finals. So you apparently upgrade your roster and you should be able to win it all, right?
Right?
This offseason, the Magic lost one of their key ingredients, Hedo Turkoglu. 6'10, handles like a guard, creates matchup problems and is fantastic in the clutch. Definately a loss. Having him play at the 2/3 spot was a luxury the Magic will no longer have. So that is definately a minus(-) right there.
Now, The Magic have brought in Vince Carter, Ryan Anderson, Brandon Bass and to a lesser extent Jason Williams.
I love the addition of Anderson and Bass. Anderson spreads the floor like Shard which is exactly what Dwight needs since he has yet to develop a jumpshot. Anderson has also seem to fit into the system already. So there's a plus (+).
I have been a fan of Bass for a while. He might not be the tallest Power Forward you will meet but he gets in and will get it done. NO finesse, no fadeaways, just pure muscle. And I love that! ...If only Dwight learnt to be more like that.
However, here comes the big acquisition. Vince Carter.
He is a better player than Hedo. Not even a question really.
But with him means that the Magic resort to a more conventional lineup. Shard will still be a mismatch at the 3 but he never saw the ball THAT much in the offense anways. He stayed out on the perimeter and drew his guy out but it wasnt like he was driving to the hoop that much.
How Vince deals with 3 guys who will want their shots will also be interesting, Nelson, Shard and Dwight will all want their touches. With this in mind, it is also important to remember that Nelson has never really been a Steve Nash/Jason Kidd type of Point Guard. So for me, Vince is very much a (?).
The bench for the Magic will be much stronger since the Gortatinator stayed around (highest paid 5-10 minute man in the league). Even JJ proved to be pretty decent against the Celtics. Who would have thought that??
So from a Magic Fan, this year looks exciting but I can't help but wonder what lies ahead.
I'm hoping a 60+ win season... and another shot at the Lakers.
